In February 2007, US Army Sgt. First class Michael Schlitz (now retired) was severely wounded after a improvised explosive device struck his vehicle killing his driver, medic, and gunner in Iraq. He suffered burns over 85% of his body, lost the sight in one eye, and both of his hands. He was among several of the veterans that attended the Smyrna Memorial Day ceremony on Monday morning.

"That's the only way to live", Schlitz said after he was asked about how he stayed so positive after the devastating bombing he was involved in. He says that he lost three men and that it's up to him to live a good life that they didn't get a chance to.

Schlitz considers himself a living miracle. He said that without the medical training of his service members and the technology of today, he wouldn't have survived.
